The High Incarceration Rate Of Juveniles - 1748 Words
The high incarceration rate of juveniles is a significant social problem that affects society as a whole as well as the youthââ¬â¢s individual welfare and developmental trajectory. Adolescents who are incarcerated in the juvenile justice system face a multitude of negative lifelong implications. The history of incarcerating youth in residential facilities such as juvenile halls, camps, ranches or group homes as a consequence for committing crimes has a deep-rooted history in the United States. ââ¬Å"For more than a century, the predominant strategy for treatment and punishments of serious and sometimes not-so-serious juveniles offenders in the US has been placement into large juvenile corrections institutionsâ⬠(Mendel, 2013, p.4). During the 18th and early 19th century, the judicial system harshly reprimanded youth and confined them in overcrowded penitentiary institutions with populations of adult offenders and the severely mentally ill (Center on Juvenile and Criminal Jus tice, 2014). Federal level policy protection of juveniles, who committed crimes and were sentenced to punishment by confinement, was not recognized until the Juveniles Justice and Delinquency Prevention (JJDP) Act was passed in 1974. The JJDP Act required that ââ¬Å"(1) youth offenders were to have ââ¬Å"sight and sound separation from adult offenders to prevent any contact between the two groups; (2) youth who have committed status offenses (i.e. curfew, truancy, alcohol possession, etc.) could not be placed in aShow MoreRelatedRacism: Incarceration of a Household Member and Hispanic Health Disparities1344 Words à |à 6 Pagesof racism are far behind; however it is clear that institutional racism still exists in this country. Comparing Saint Augustine and Charles Taylors Ideas of...
Comparing Saint Augustine and Charles Taylors Ideas of Authenticity The notion of authenticity is one of self-fulfillment and Charles Taylor recognizes that there are dangers in accepting modernityââ¬â¢s drive toward self-realization. However, he is not willing to give up on this idea of ââ¬Å"authenticity.â⬠In The Ethics of Authenticity, Taylor lays out a system of thought and morals that connect our search for self-realization with our desire towards self-creation. He is attempting to keep a form of individualism while still operating under objectivism. He will point out the good and damaging aspects of the modern development of an authentic self and mention the importance of some moral measurement system. Taylor claims that St.â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The fear here is that everything will be decided on a cost-benefit mentality. This leads to absurd practices of ââ¬Å"putting dollar assessments on human lives.â⬠The last worry is a lack of participation in the political realm. Individuals are enclosed in their own comfort zones and have little motivation to leave their homes and the satisfactions of their private lives to get involved. Once participation declines the more the bureaucratic state takes control and leaves the citizens powerless. This can lead to soft-despotism which Alexis de Tocqueville describes as a society where most of its members have given up being actively involved in the ordering of that society only to find out that it is run by a vast guardian-like power that discourages participation and jeopardizes political liberty. Taylor does not want to slip into the acceptance of these three malaises. He claims that all of these issues are controversial. He seems to claim neutrality between modernity knockers and modernity boosters. The knockers are those who believe that instrumental reason and modern individualism inevitably lead to a culture that is preoccupied with the self and self-indulgence and puts moral horizons and political liberty at risk. The boosters are those who accept the consequences of modernity and believe that a rejection of these will result in a culture that hinders the spread ofShow MoreRelatedManagement Course: MbaâËâ10 General Management215330 Words à |à 862 Pageshow they have outdistanced their competitors, who have not quite figured out that this is key to a companyââ¬â¢s competitive advantage. Legalizing Prostitution Essay Example For Students
Legalizing Prostitution Essay ProstitutionOutline Thesis: Prostitution should be legalized because not only does it financially benefit the country, but legalized prostitution could also reduce crime. I. Illegalized prostitution A. Preservation of morality B. Health risks C. Violent crime D. Costs to citizens II. Legalized prostitution A. Constitutional right B. Regular health exam C. Reduction of violent crime D. Government regulation III. Argument Prostitution is known as the oldest profession in the world, however, many states in the U.S. outlaw it. The textbook definition of prostitution is the act or practice of engaging in sexual acts for money (Prostitution, Macmillan 805). Nevada is the first in the United States to legalize prostitution. Although the long term effects of legalized prostitution is uncertain, the short term effects have been economically beneficial. Prostitution should be legalized because not only could it financially benefit the country, but it could also reduce crime. There are many rea sons why prostitution is illegal in 49 U.S. states today. First, and foremost, many people feel that prostitution should stay illegal in order to preserve morality. Parents do not want their children to grow up thinking that prostitution is acceptable. Worse yet, parents do not want to hear their children say, When I grow up, I want to be a prostitute. Christianity also looks down upon prostitution because according to their beliefs, the act of sex is only to be done when a man and a women are in love and married. Monogamy is to be practiced in the marriage, and any violation of this is considered a sin. Another reason why the preservation of morality is so important is that peoples morals shape the future of a nation. Many people feel that if prostitution is legalized, then its long term effects would be detrimental to the United States. The divorce rate in the United States peaked at an all time high in 1980 (Marriage 56). By the legalization of prostitution, this would allow room for husbands and wives to commit adultery. Thus, leading the marriage to a divorce. The divorce rate has really increased over the centuries. In the U.S. today, the divorce rate is fifty percent of the U.S. (Holland 86). Second, prostitution is a great health risk to the U.S. because of the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). A major concern about STDs is the spread of AIDS, which is currently a deadly STD because a cure has not been found for the disease. The transmission of 2 STDs is already on the rise due to many uneducated teenagers having unprotected sex. In addition, most of theses teens are not going to a physician to be screened for STDs. Because of this, many curable STDs are going untreated and being spread throughout a community. Prostitution only adds to this problem because prostitutes have sexual contact on a daily basis, and rarely have themselves screened for STDs. Most of the time, prostitutes will not go to a doctor because they cant afford it, theyre too afraid, and/or they just dont want to deal with it. Unfortunately, simply ignoring the problem does not make it go away. Some taxpayers feel that this problem will only increase the cost of health care. In some cases prostitutes become pregnant and are left to raise a child on their own. For these women, their futures are uncertain because now they have a child to care for. This is another concern for taxpayers because the majority of these women will seek government assistance. With prostitution being illegal, many violent crimes against prostitutes go unreported every year. Prostitutes are often too frightened to report the crime to police. Most of the time, the crimes perpetuator is a pimp or a client. Several of the crimes committed against prostitutes include robbery, kidnaping, rape, battery, and/or homicide. Prostitutes, however, are not the only victims. Sometimes the client is also the victim. A street prostitute is already a lawbreaker, which may encourage other crime s, such as rolling clients (drugging them and stealing their money) (Street Cleaning 25). As a result, crimes associated with illegal prostitution often go unreported and without punishment. Although enforcement of illegal prostitution exhausts a great amount of time, some citizens feel that the time is well spent. Many residents complain that street prostitution brings noise, declining property values, a bad environment for children, and a health threat. Residents 3 feel that street prostitution detracts from the innocence of their childrens childhood; and no price is too high to prevent this from happening. One tactic that is being implemented by a few urban police departments is the seizure of the vehicle belonging to the prostitutes client. The driver must then appear at an impoundment garage to pay a fine and processing costs, typically around $300. All parties whose names appear on the vehicle registration-wives and employers included-must then sign if the car is to be returne d (Prostitution, CQ 32). Prostitution involves many different kinds of crimes. With this in mind, some citizens feel that if prostitution is eliminated, then many of the crimes associated with prostitution will also be eliminated or decreased. Thus, saving taxpayers money that would ordinarily be used in court fees and enforcement fees. On the other hand, a survey taken in 1993 showed that 40 percent of Americans think that prostitution should be legalized and regulated (Database 16). From the technical aspect, prostitution should not be illegal because the act itself does not infringe upon anyones constitutional right. Furthermore, no where in the constitution does it state that accepting or offering money for sexual acts is illegal. Many people, however, argue that our forefathers did not envision a nation where sex was a profession and taxable. Conversely, prostitution has been around for so long that it is almost apart of our history. No one actually knows when prostitution bega n or how it originated; yet, our forefathers had to know about prostitution, because Europe (especially France and Russia) is infamous for the prostitutes who work there. Still, the worlds oldest trade has always outwitted attempts to suppress it (Street Cleaning 24). Another reason why some citizens are calling for the decriminalization of prostitution is that it would greatly reduce the transmission of STDs. Legalized prostitution has shown that 4 prostitutes who work in brothels practice safe sex and are less likely to contract and transmit STDs. As indicated in the article entitled, Prostitution: George Flint, director of the Nevada Brothel Association, point with pride to the 20,000 monthly AIDS tests that have been performed on legal prostitutes since tests were required in 1986-with HIV showing up only among job applicants. Similarly, not a single case of AIDS turned up in a 1991 survey of 7,000 tests on 246 legal prostitutes in Nevada from 1982 to 989. By contrast, of 700 il legal prostitutes arrested in 1990 for soliciting in Nevada, 10 percent tested positive for HIV (36). Many brothels in Nevada also require its customers to go through an exam before business is able to proceed. This practice of screening customers adds to the record of safe sex in legal prostitution. With this in mind, brothels are able to control (to an extent) the statistics of STDs in legal prostitution. In summary, legal prostitution is a safer alternative to street prostitution because customers and job applicants are screened for STDs. Another benefit of legal prostitution is the reduction of violent crimes. Almost all brothels located in Nevada provide security for their workers. This creates a safe working environment for the prostitutes. Crimes against prostitutes such as robbery, kidnaping, rape, battery, and/or homicide are greatly reduced. Security is not only for the prostitutes, but it is also for the customers. This decreases the chances of prostitutes rolling their c lients. Most brothels also enforce a drug-free policy, which also adds to the reduction in violent crimes. A major advantage to legal prostitution is government regulation. Undoubtedly, the government will earn revenue from brothels and be able to monitor part of the sex industry. A 5 significant benefit to government involvement in prostitution are the regulations and standards that will be set forth for all brothels to meet. This will allow for a clean and safe environment for both patrons and workers. Government regulation would also mean the elimination of pimps. Street prostitutes are normally controlled by a pimp who usually keeps the prostitute dependent on drugs so that he/she can control the money that the prostitute makes. While many critics may maintain that prostitution is immoral and unethical, the issue cannot be denied. Prostitution happens all over the world and in most cities. A great deal of money and time is spent attempting to stop illegal prostitution. When a pr ostitute is picked up by the police, she/he usually spends a night in jail, goes to court, pays a fine, serves a short time in jail and/or completes community service. Then, the prostitute is released and is back on the streets in no time. Dennis Martin, president of the National Association of Police Chiefs, once observed that prostitution enforcement is erratic and depends completely on how much the public complains and on pressure from politicians. Its much too time-consuming, and police forces are short-staffed (qtd. in Prostitutes, CQ 32). Many citizens feel that police efforts should be directed towards more serious crimes, such as drug trafficking. With the cost of court fees, enforcement, and jail housing for the convicted prostitutes, some citizens are beginning to wonder if the government is approaching the problem correctly. In 1985 it was calculated that each of Americas biggest cities spent $12m a year fighting prostitution . . . Mr. Richwald a doctor from the Universit y of Los Angeles guesses that prostitution costs Los Angeles at least $100m a year (Street Cleaning 25). For many people, money is the bottom-line. For some citizens, however, money takes a backseat to ethics, morals, and values. Legalized prostitutionis really a question of value and judgement. Nevertheless, morals and values cannot be imposed 6 by the government. Furthermore, it is not the duty of the government to teach values to children. Instead, it is the job of parents to teach their children from right and wrong. If the government was allowed regulate morals and values to a nation, then would that same government be a democracy or a dictatorship? Prostitution today, should be legalized because it would create revenue for the government and greatly reduce crime in most cities. 7 Bibliography Database. US News World Report Nov. 1993: 16. Reflection on Team Work free essay sample
Reviewing the three-months-long process of cooperation, I really found this experience of learning meaningful and fruitful. This reflective essay is a conclusion of my sympathetic introspection of the mistakes I made, the difficulties I confronted and the conflicts I faced. The following discussion falls into three parts, respectively the elaborations of my self-cognizance about how coordinators can improve team cohesion on the basis of mutual trust with other team roles, how we should view the conflicts occurring in the process of cooperation and how to create synergy through team work. The first lesson I have learned from the process is that mutual respect and trust come before team cohesion. Functioning as the coordinator of our team, I also played the leading role in the session of allocating tasks. In order not to be effected by subjective opinions and favoritism, I adopted drawing-lots to spread out the teamwork. Ideally all the team members would embrace the assignment, yet conflicts occurred. We will write a custom essay sample on Reflection on Team Work or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page After the allocation, morale kept sinking lower. Some members thought that it was so unlucky of them to lose the parts they were good at, and they were unable to undertake their parts on hand. Then I got to realize that drawing-lots on one hand could ensure the equity in decision making, but on another hand could also reflect my unsureness and distrust of the other memberââ¬â¢s abilities. In other words, there are differences between ordering one to finish a task and entrusting one with a commission. The later helps the other team role players to produce not only a sense of being respected and trusted, but also a feeling of being expected. In order to better resolve the problems later when similar situations take place again, I have summed up two principles of how oordinators show respect and trust to their subordinates and accordingly build up team morale and team cohesion. For one thing, it is necessary to impress the equal importance of all the tasks on my team members there are no good tasks or bad tasks, but only the most suitable tasks and other less suitable tasks for you. For another, encouragement and incitement are essential to inspiring membersââ¬â¢ enthu siasm in their assigned duties. With regard to motivation, the coordinator should offer the other team members with opportunities to fulfill themselves, as well as enough room for improvement. All in all, I am going to assist my team members in sharing a tacit notion that ââ¬Å"I am designated to undertake this part not because my ability is outstanding or just the opposite, but because I can better fulfill this role than the other team members do, as far as the task itself is concerned. â⬠In retrospect, another enlightenment I have gained is that, if being well utilized, conflicts and disagreements can also produce positive effects. At the primary stage of the mission, all of the team members were intentionally trying to keep a concordant relationship with each other as well as to avoid disputes and differences. However, later on we found it impossible to put our ideas into practice, for different ideas were jumbled up without screening. It seemed that no one wanted to break the deadlock. If it were not for one of the members who cancelled all our original ideas, we might have already undergone a great frustration. The word ââ¬Å"conflictâ⬠is always related to anger, disunity and standstill. Being that as it may, when conflict exists, it generally indicates membersââ¬â¢ commitment to the team goal, because they are trying to come up with the best solutions. So conflicts can in turn promote challenges, heighten individual regards to the issues, and increase individual efforts (Laura 2005). Being a coordinator, I took up the responsibility for turning the conflicts into beneficial effects. Looking back, I could have done better in inspiring the members as an example, to pour out frankly personal opinions. It seems that such disagreements can hardly be avoided in the process of teamwork. Hence, no matter what team roles I am going to play, when faced with conflicts, I will adhere myself to the following two points: Firstly, it is better for me to speak up all my points of view. Even if these ideas may not be recognized and may finally be rejected, the other members can have the opportunities to rethink their own ideas from my perspective against the differences and disagreements. Secondly, it is beneficial for me as a team role player to respect the other membersââ¬â¢ opinions, however divergent these opinions may be from my own points of view. Because it happens that some seemingly irrational ideas are finally proved to be breakthroughs. A typical example comes from Steve Jobs who gave birth to the widely used ARM and iOS. Jobs had initially decided to base the Apple tablet on Intelââ¬â¢s Atom platform, but Tony Fadell, the father of iPod, strongly opposed the idea based on power consumption and even threatened to hand in his resignation should Jobs proceed with Intelââ¬â¢s platform (Newsle 2011). Thanks to Jobs listening to Tony, ARM and iOS have been dominating tablets and have been popular almost all over the world. Taking the example of Steve Jobs for reference, I will take any suggestion from others into consideration before drawing a particular conclusion or making a certain decision. In addition, rather than that all the members show their abilities to the full extent, it is that we set our personal interests below the best interests of the team as a whole, that creates synergy (Matthew 2012). Out of my team membersââ¬â¢ trust on me and also out of my willingness to show off, I tended to excessively play my leading role during the process of cooperation. I was expected to function as a leader and to orient my members, but gradually my performance deviated from their expectation. Although I made efforts to figure out all the details so as to lead the members to the right direction, the thing is that, when I was telling them what to do and how to do it, I actually was also setting limits to restrict their performances. The idealist objective of teamwork is to create obvious synergies. In other words, a successful team should produce an effect greater than the sum of individual effects. Via applying speculative knowledge to practical operation, I have concluded several new ideas on how to build up a synergetic team. First of all, a synergetic team requires the team members to make certain sacrifices, including restraining oneself for the balanced development of other team members. On the contrary, members who have limited abilities should try to move forward and realize self-transcendence. Just as the capacity of a bucket depends on its shortest board, the capacity of a team is largely related to the weak links in the process of teamwork. Only when there are concerted efforts from all the team members, then a synergetic team can be set up. To sum up, there are still many weaknesses to be improved despite I have performed well in the team. Were it not for the efforts and cooperation from all the team members, I may not have overcome the difficulties I met with, let alone got rid of the mistakes I made unconsciously. The lessons I have learned from this experience will also be applied later in my career. Whatever team role I am going to play, being as a component of the whole team, I will give priority to team benefits and prevent myself from making a showy display of my abilities. Further more, I will try to appreciate the other membersââ¬â¢ opinions and make the most of their suggestions. Additionally, I will view conflicts in a rational way so as to create positive effects for my team.

Born May 10, 1958, in Los Angeles, California, Ellen Ochoa became the first fe-male Hispanic astronaut in 1990. Ellen Ochoa first dreamed of taking part in a space flight during her graduate-school days, when several of her fellow students applied to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) astronaut-training program. While they did not make the final cut, she persevered throughout the lengthy and difficult selection process and finally achieved her goal in 1990, making her the first female His-panic astronaut in NASA history. Since then, Ochoa has spent hundreds of hours in space as a member of three different shuttle crews performing vital research and taking part in historic firsts. Such high-profile success has made her a role model for students across the nation, an assignment Ochoa has accepted with pride and enthusiasm. Although she was born in Los Angeles, California, Ellen Ochoa has always re-garded the suburban San Diego community of La Mesa as her hometown. Free Essays on The Brave One Free Essays on The Brave One Born May 10, 1958, in Los Angeles, California, Ellen Ochoa became the first fe-male Hispanic astronaut in 1990. The Difference Between Fellowships and Scholarships
The Difference Between Fellowships and Scholarships You may have heard other students talk about applying for a scholarship or a fellowship and wondered what the difference is between the two. Scholarships and fellowships are forms of financial aid, but they arent exactly the same thing. In this article, well explore the difference between fellowships and scholarships so that you can learn what each type of aid means for you. Scholarships Defined A scholarship is a type of funding that can be applied to educational costs, such as tuition, books, fees, etc. Scholarships are also known as grants or financial aid. There are many different types of scholarships. Some are awarded based on financial need, while others are awarded based on merit. You can also receive scholarships from random drawings, membership in a particular organization, or through a contest (such as an essay competition). A scholarship is a desirable form of financial aid because it does not have to be paid back like a student loan. The amounts awarded to a student through a scholarship could be as little as $100 or as high as $120,000 on up. Some scholarships are renewable, which means that you can use the scholarship to pay for your first year of undergraduate school and then renew it in your second year, third year, and fourth year. Scholarships are available for undergraduate and graduate level study, but scholarships are typically more plentiful for undergraduate students. Scholarship Example The National Merit Scholarship is an example of a well-known, longstanding scholarship for students seeking an undergraduate degree. Each year, the National Merit Scholarship Program awards scholarships worth $2,500 each to thousands of high school students who achieve exceptionally high scores on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). Each $2,500 scholarship is issued through a single one-time payment, meaning the scholarship cannot be renewed each year. Another example of a scholarship is the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation College Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to high school students with financial need and a record of academic achievement. Scholarship winners receive up to $40,000 per year to put towards tuition, living expenses, books, and required fees. This scholarship can be renewed each year for up to four years, making the entire award worth up to $120,000. Fellowships Defined Like a scholarship, a fellowship is also a type of grant that can be applied to educational costs such as tuition, books, fees, etc. It does not need to be paid back like a student loan.à These awards are usually geared toward students who are earning a masters degree or doctorate degree. Although many fellowships include a tuition stipend, some of them are designed to fund a research project. Fellowships are sometimes available for pre-baccalaureate research projects but are more commonly available to graduate-level students who are performing some form of post-baccalaureate research. Service commitments, such as a commitment to complete a particular project, teach other students, or participate in an internship, may be required as part of the fellowship. These service commitments may be required for a specific period of time, such as six months, one year, or two years. Some fellowships are renewable. Unlike scholarships, fellowships are not usually need-based. They are also rarely awarded at random to contest winners. Fellowships are typically merit-based, which means you must demonstrate some form of achievement in your chosen field, or at the very least, demonstrate potential to achieve or do something impressive in your field. Fellowship Example The Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans is a fellowship program for immigrants and children of immigrants who are earning a graduate degree in the United States. The fellowship covers 50 percent of tuition and includes a $25,000 stipend. Thirty fellowships are awarded each year. This fellowship program is merit-based, meaning that applicants must be able to demonstrate a commitment to, or at least a capacity for, accomplishment and contributionsà in their field of study. Another example of a fellowship is the Department of Energy National Nuclear Security Administration Stewardship Science Graduate Fellowship (DOE NNSA SSGF). This fellowship program is for students who are seeking a Ph.D. in science and engineering fields. Fellows receive full tuition for their chosen program, a $36,000 yearly stipend, and an annual $1,000 academic allowance. They must participate in a fellowship conference in the summer and a 12-weekà research practicumà at one of DOEs national defense laboratories. This fellowship can be renewed annually for up to four years. Applying for Scholarships and Fellowships Most scholarship and fellowship programs have an application deadline, which means that you must apply by a certain date to be eligible. These deadlines vary by program. However, you typically apply for a scholarship or fellowship the year before you need it or in the same year that you need it. Some scholarship and fellowship programs also have additional eligibility requirements. For example, you may need a GPA of at least 3.0 to apply or you may be required to be a member of a particular organization or demographic to be eligible for the award. No matter what the program requirements are, it is important to follow all of the rules when submitting your application to increase your chances of success. It is also important to remember that many scholarship and fellowship competitions are competitive- there are a lot of people who want free money for school- so you should always take your time to put your best foot forward and submit an application that you can be proud of. For example, if you have to submit an essay as part of the application process, make sure that the essay reflects your best work. Tax Implications of Fellowships and Scholarships There are tax implications that you should be aware of when accepting a fellowship or scholarship in the United States. The amounts that you receive may be tax-free or you may be required to report them as taxable income. A fellowship or scholarship is tax-free if you will be using the money you receive to pay for required tuition, fees, books, supplies, and equipment for courses at an academic institution where youre a candidate for a degree. The academic institution you are attending must conduct regular educational activities and have a faculty, curriculum, and body of students. In other words, it has to be a real school. A fellowship or scholarship is considered taxable income and must be reported as part of your gross income if the money you receive is used to pay for incidental expenses not required by the courses you need to take to earn your degree. Examples of incidental expenses include travel or commuting expenses, room and board, and optional equipment (i.e., materials that are not required to complete the necessary courses). A fellowship or scholarship is also considered taxable income if the money you receive serves as a payment for research, teaching, or other services that you must perform in order to receive the scholarship or fellowship. For example, if you are given a fellowship as payment for your teaching one or more courses at the school, the fellowship is considered income and must be claimed as income.

Critical analysis and evaluation Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 1
Critical analysis and evaluation - Essay Example Then, there were the practical considerations, which could be seen in her concentration on form ââ¬â the number of pints, the pubââ¬â¢s structure, the lightings and their significance. Ethical relativism can also be detected in the attitude towards the effects of alcohol. One sees this in the statement about how the pub endures time because beer and men would always be present. This is particularly emphasized in her linking of the pubââ¬â¢s disrepair to its importance in menââ¬â¢s life and her double talk about beer being a ââ¬Å"cohesive element.â⬠While it is a clear reference to uniting all elements in the painting, there is a hint that beer contributes to the companionship and dialogue that happens in the pub. Aesthetic perspectives are, of course, primary in the description as critiques on structure, story, perspective, color and interpretations were each paid their dues. And so this would be the major evaluative standard used. In the opinion of this writer, Benko has given sufficient attention to the elements and relationships suggested by the composition to support her conclusions. The attention to detail in referencing the image and creating a clear picture in her description was cogent and showed a thoughtful assimilation of material from the description of the image itself, as well as the authorââ¬â¢s translation. For example, in the decay, cracks, stains and disrepair she found on the pub she had seen warmth and affection instead of neglect. She also supplied personal commentary on drinking and men and the significance of the pub, including connotations of permanence and social significance. Many of the image descriptions are written in a combined form which take away from analysis because they provide material on a summarizing basis that has already been apparent. Her description did not just summarize the referenced elements because

Music Origin :: Art
Music Origin Introduction: For centuries people had dreamed of capturing the sounds and music from the environment. Many had attempted it but no one had succeeded until Thomas Alva Edison discovered a method of recording and playing back sound. What had started out as an apparatus intended as part of an improved telephone led to the development of an instrument which would change the world, making it a happier, even a better, place to live. Revolutions: (Case of Mp3 sharing software development) A revolution in the music industry has surfaced In 1999, Shawn Fanning, a Northeastern University undergraduate, wrote a small MP3-sharing software application known as Napster. Originally designed for the exchange of Fanning and friends' own recordings, Napster quickly became a conduit for mainstream MP3s, and an MP3-sharing community was built overnight as the beta version of the shareware program quickly caught on. New songs could be found and downloaded at the touch of a button. Entire albums could be exchanged in minutes for free. In addition, the natal Sagittarian Sun (self) in the companyââ¬â¢s chart sextiles Mars (action) conjunct Neptune (illusion, lack of boundaries), producing the ability to do it all anywhere with complete anonymity. The Recording Industry Association of America contends that the service Napster provides is just a high-tech shortcut to music piracy. But in recent ââ¬Å"friends of the courtâ⬠briefs, the Computer and Communications Industry Association, which represents tech giants like AT&T, Yahoo and Oracle, said the courts need to reinterpret and revise some of the ââ¬Å"overprotectiveâ⬠models for guarding intellectual property. Online business contributed much to the music industry as similar to the other traditional companies. It helped the business to grow globally and to reach out the customers all over the world. Easy access, news details, shipping to home, attractive prices, lots of choices made the music industry to boom in the early 1990ââ¬â¢s. Music Vs Internet: The recorded music industry has capitulated. After years of effort and millions of dollars spent on lawyers in prosecuting music pirates, the big four record companies have joined the internet age. Legal, pay-per-track music sites are about to proliferate. Australia should have its first by Christmas. It is likely it will be a local version of the successful Apple iMusic Store, which operates only in North America. Locally, Telstra is working on a licensing deal with at least one record company. The future of music sites depends on forging complex regional licensing deals between the record companies, musicians and online vendors such as Apple, Real Networks' Rhapsody, Roxio (owners of Press Play and about-to-be legal Napster) and Microsoft's MSN.

With those attempts, indispensable working experience can be added into my professional portfolio. Networking Networking plays an indispensable function in farther growing for architecture design companies, for the communicating of design constructs and updated engineerings helps to set up a long-run common good cooperation on a higher degree. Outstanding associations and diaries of interior architecture design serve as effectual medium for the communicating within the industry. In What Ways Did the Causes of the Second World War Differ?
In what ways did the causes of the Second World War differ from the causes of the First World War? The causes of World War One and World War Two shared both differences and similarities, but overall there were more differences between the two. The social, political, and economic circumstances of the times varied, though at times correlated with each other, but there are extreme differences that help create a different atmosphere for each war.The assassination of Franz Ferdinand, on the 28th June, 1914, set off World War One; Martel argues ââ¬Å"The assassination of Archduke Ferdinand was the final straw in the struggle for mastery in the Balkansâ⬠. He was shot by Gavrilo Princip, a member of the Black Hand, a Serbian group set up to fight for the unification of all South Slav territories that had been annexed by Austria-Hungary. Two months after the shooting Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, setting off the next chain of events that brought into account the alliance syste m.In 1938, a year before the start of World War Two, Hitler was growing ever more confident due to the lack of resistance he experienced from any other European country. He had annexed Austria with little or no consequences, and made a deal with France and Britain guaranteeing him the Sudetenland if he did not go after any other territories. In 1939 he broke this deal by occupying Czechoslovakia, and starting to advance on Danzig. At this point, the Allies realized that they must put an end to Hitlerââ¬â¢s advance, as they could already see that Hitler had a lot more in mind than just the invasion of Poland. The Alliance system was present throughout both wars, although as countries surrendered and changed loyalties none of them remained permanent. The alliances system was originally created to help keep the peace in Europe, with the belief that they would act together as a defensive mechanism against any attack, as it was also in their own interest to keep Europe in peace.Neverth eless the alliance system is now seen as a major cause of the war, as Schmit believes: ââ¬Å"The alliances which had originally served as the cause of peace when put to the final test operated to convert a local quarrel into a general warâ⬠, as two small countries with a territorial dispute were able to set of a chain reaction in the alliances that brought the greatest powers in Europe to declare war on each other. The Wall St. Crash of 1929 is believed to have led to the Great Depression of the 1930s, and caused there to be 6 million unemployed in Germany. This social unrest and resentment caused the Weimar Republic to become even more unpopular, and left Hitler with an opportunity to gain the publicââ¬â¢s support. He set up soup kitchens across Germany to feed the unemployed, and during his election campaign of 1933 he promised to abolish unemployment if elected. The unpopularity of the Weimar government left the people looking for someone who could restore national pride to Germany and save her from her current depression, and it appeared as if Hitler could do exactly that, which led to an increase in popularity and votes.Historians such as Fischer blame the German people for the out break of the Second World War as it was their support that gave Hitler power to pursue his plans. The Treaty of Versailles was felt to bring humiliation to Germany, and created a feeling of Diktat. It was eventually seen by other European countries as being to harsh. Germany and her allies had to agree to take all of the blame for the war; lost all its overseas colonies, the Saar and Rhineland, along with many more military, territorial and legal restrictions. The Rhineland was demilitarized and was seen as a buffer zone between the borders of France and Germany. When Hitler ordered his troops to march into the Rhineland he said: ââ¬Å"The 48 hours after the march into the Rhineland were the most nerve-racking in my life. If the French had marched into the Rhineland we would have had to withdraw, for the military resources at our disposal would have been wholly inadequate for even moderate resistance. This shows the weakness of the League of Nations, because if the League of Nations had shown any resistance to Hitlerââ¬â¢s expansion the expansion would of stopped and Hitler would of withdrawn from the Rhineland. ââ¬Å"a credible achievement that eventually failed because of the reluctance of the victors to enforce itâ⬠-Ruth Henig The failure of other countries to check German ambition was also apparent in World War One, when Germanyââ¬â¢s new foreign policy meant that they began to rely heavily on the military to force their way into the European powers and increase their overseas empire, long with other advantages for themselves. Hitlerââ¬â¢s rearmament of Germany was necessary due to the fact that the Treaty of Versailles had left her unable to defend herself. Conscription was banned and troop numbers could be no more than 100,00 0. Weapons were no longer allowed to be manufactured, and importing and exporting weapons was also prohibited. The Navy was decreased to 15,000 men, 6 battleships, 6 cruisers, 12 destroyers and 12 torpedo boats. Submarines were banned, and so were aircrafts. The rearmament of Germany was a lengthy task, and Hitler at first found loopholes in the treaty that allowed for aircraft clubs to be set up that allowed men to learn how to fly without it being considered as military preparation. Rearmament wasnââ¬â¢t an issue in the run up to World War One as no such restrictions had been placed on Germany, although they did start a naval arms race with Britain while they increased their fleet size. ââ¬Å"[The German] bid for continental supremacy was certainly decisive in bringing on the European Warâ⬠AJP Taylor. Both World Wars seem to start from the same general situations, such as a the urge to increase the nations strength and image in front of the other nations, but when looked a t closely, it is evident that there are many differences between the causes of the two Wars. Factors such as the Treaty of Versailles and the Wall Street Crash of 1929 play a big part in the start of the Second World War. Thus in conclusion the causes of World War Two differ from the causes of World War One.

Shepard Fairey, the Controversial Street Artist
Shepard Fairey, the Controversial Street Artist Often described as a Street artist, Shepard Faireys name first began to appear in the news for wheat pasting (a method of adorning public spaces with the artists own posters by way of a water and wheat mixture- like a wallpaper paste), sticker tagging, and the numerous accompanying arrests that now comprise his official criminal record. Hes best known for his painting of Obama in 2008à titled Hopeà and his poster from 1992 titled Obey, which inspired a clothing line of the same name. I think the Obey icon image finds a balance between goofy and creepy, humorous and monolithic. I consider the image the counter-culture Big Brother. Id like to think of it as a sign or symbol that people are watching Big Brother as well. Ive had people ranging from anarchists to the president of the National Reserve Bank embrace my work and I think the more diverse the audience is, the more potential for interesting dialogue there is.- Stepardà Fairey Early Life and Training Shepard Fairey was Frank Shepard Fairey born on February 15, 1970, in Charleston, South Carolina. The son of a physician, Shepard Fairey fell in love with making art at age 14. After graduating from the prestigious Idyllwild School of Music and the Arts in Idyllwild, California in 1988, he was accepted at the Rhode Island School of Design. (If youre not familiar with this fine institution, RISD is almost ridiculously hard to get into and enjoys a sterling reputation as a training ground for working artists.) Fairey graduated in 1992 with a B.F.A. in Illustration. From the Street to Art While attending RISD, Fairey had a part-time job in a Providence skateboarding shop. The marginalized, underground culture there (where styles are out as soon as theyre in) synthesized with that rarified art school culture and Faireys ongoing interests in punk music and stenciling his own punk music t-shirts. Everything meshed on the day a friend asked him how to create a stencil. Fairey demonstrated with a newspaper ad for a professional wrestling match featuring Andre the Giant which was the most banal image he could have grabbed. Tantalizing what if possibilities began to cross Faireys mind. It came to pass that Fairey, who had only recently become aware of Graffiti Art, took his Obey stencils and stickers to the streets. Andre the Giant famously gained a posse and Faireys name was launched. Controversy Around Faireys Work Fairey has often been accused of plagiarizing other artists work. In some cases, even casual examination of these claims shows almost verbatim copying with little transformation. While some of the older, political propaganda works are in the public domain, others are not. The real issue seems to be that Fairey copyrights these appropriations, enforces his copyrights and profits from them. There are a lot of different people whoââ¬â¢sà [sic]à work I like that arent necessarily aesthetic influences, but conceptual- and there are some that are aesthetic. Iââ¬â¢m inspired by John VanHammersfeld who did a lot of psychedelic poster graphics and one of my earliest Obey Giant graphics was my knock of his iconic Hendrix graphic. My work is very much a melting pot of a lot of different influences.- Stepardà Fairey Fairey also disappointed a segment of his fans by not remaining a cult figure and beginning to make money as an artist. Conversely, his messages calling for social and political change are sincere, he donates heavily to causes and he keeps a staff of assistant artists gainfully employed. Many parallels can be drawn between Faireys image sources and those of Andy Warhol, who is now celebrated in the art world. Only time will tell if Fairey attains Warholian status, but he gained a lasting place in history for the HOPE poster during Barack Obamas 2008 Presidential campaign. Sources Fairey, Shepard. Santa Barbara Song Sparrow Facts The Santa Barbara Song Sparrow (Melospiza melodia graminea, sensu) is a now-extinct subspecies of song sparrow that lived on Santa Barbara Island in California and was most closely related to the Channel Island Song Sparrow (Melospiza melodia graminea). It was one of the smallest of the 23 subspecies of song sparrows and had a perky short tail. Fast Facts: Santa Barbara Song Sparrow Scientific Name: Melospiza melodia graminea, sensuCommon Name: Santa Barbara Song SparrowBasic Animal Group: BirdSize: 4.7ââ¬â6.7 inches; wingspan 7.1ââ¬â9.4 inchesWeight: 0.4ââ¬â1.9 ouncesLifespan: 4 yearsDiet:à OmnivoreHabitat: On Santa Barbara Island, Channel Islands, CaliforniaPopulation: 0Conservation Status: Extinct Description There are 34 subspecies of song sparrows in the world: It is one of the most polytypic birds in North America, with a good deal of variation, especially in geographically restricted species. The Santa Barbara Song Sparrow resembled other similar subspeciesà and is described as most closely resembling the Heermanns Song Sparrow (Melospiza melodia heermanni). It was one of the smallest song sparrow subspecies and was characterized by a particularly gray back with dark streaks. Most song sparrows are browner in color with dark streaks. In general, a song sparrows breast and belly are white with dark streaking and a dark brown spot in the middle of the breast. It has a brown-capped head and a long, brown tail that is rounded on the end. The sparrows face is gray and streaked. The Santa Barbara song sparrows were distinguished from other song sparrows by a smaller, more slender bill, and a tail which was shorter than the wing. Habitat and Range The Santa Barbara Song Sparrow was known to exist only on 639-acre Santa Barbara Island (the smallest of the Channel Islands) in Los Angeles County, California. The sparrows natural habitat on the island was much like the habitat of other species of the song sparrow, which are generally abundant and adaptable on the mainland United States. Habitat components on the island that the sparrow relied on included: Thickets of shrubs like sagebrush, dense grasslands, and other scrubby vegetation for nesting and shelter (cover)Food resources such as giant coreopsis (Coreopsis gigantean, also called the tree sunflower), the Santa Barbara Island live-forever, shrubby buckwheat, and chicoryStanding or running fresh water or a consistent source of moisture from fog or dew Diet and Behavior In general, song sparrows are known to frequently forage on the ground and also in low vegetation where they are protected from predators by thickets and shrubs. Like other song sparrow species, the Santa Barbara Song Sparrow ate a variety of plant seeds and insects (including beetles, caterpillars, bees, ants and wasps, and flies). In spring, during the periods of nesting and rearing of young, insects increased in terms of the important components of the sparrows diet. The year-round diet of song sparrows in California is 21 percent insects and 79 percent plants; the song sparrow also eats crustaceans and mollusks on the coasts. Reproduction and Offspring Based on extant species of song sparrows on San Miguel, Santa Rosa, and Anacapa islands in the Channels, the Santa Barbara song sparrow built compact, open nests of twigs and other plant material, which were optionally lined with grass. The female laid three broods per season, each between two to six red-brown marked, pale green eggs. Incubation ranged from 12ââ¬â14 days and was tended to by the female. Both parents were involved in the feeding until the sparrows were fledged 9ââ¬â12 days later.à The birds were serially and simultaneously polygamous, and DNA studies showed that 15 percent or more of the young were sired outside the social pair. Extinction Process During the first half of the 20th century, sparrow nesting habitat (scrub vegetation) on Santa Barbara Island began disappearing as a result of clearing land for farming and from browsing by introduced goats, European rabbits, and New Zealand red rabbits. Unnatural predation also threatened sparrows during this time, after the introduction of domestic cats to the island. The sparrows natural predators included the American Kestrel (Falco sparverius), Common Raven (Corvus corax), and Loggerhead Shrike (Lanius ludovicianus). Even with these new challenges to its survival, the song sparrows maintained a viable population through the summer of 1958. Unfortunately, a large fire in 1959 destroyed most of the sparrows remaining habitat. The birds are thought to have been extirpated from the island during the 1960s because years of intensive surveys and monitoring throughout the 1990s did not reveal any resident song sparrows on the island. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service officially determined that the Santa Barbara Song Sparrow was extinct and removed it from the endangered species list on October 12, 1983, citing a loss of habitat and predation by feral cats. Discuss the behavioral issues involved in Merit inc.'s standard cost Assignment
Discuss the behavioral issues involved in Merit inc.'s standard cost dilemma - Assignment Example of the employees the system does not offer a platform for the employees to work competitively in a bid to produce quality products, instead the system has offered an ideal situation which does not give allowance for errors in the processes and defects relative to the material usage. This has contributed to low productivity which is attributed to low morale level for work. On the other hand, the system has offered an ideal situation that has made it hard for the managers to achieve any set goal. This has led to a considerable decline of the managerââ¬â¢s motivation. In the case of the three responses from the plant manager, controller and human resources director, it is generally observable that the standard cost system provided an ideal situation which left the company not able to progress. In the case of the plant managerââ¬â¢s response the organization is suffering since all the operations are done in an ideal business milieu which does not reflect the efforts of the employees thus killing their morale. This aspect has seen the organizationââ¬â¢s productivity decline considerably. The advantage of this response is that the management understands well that, there is need of the standard system change to one that will be based on the expected actual prices and previous efficiency averages. This approach is advantageous since it will enhance identification of the variance relative to the level of improvement. In essence, this approach will enhance the employeesââ¬â¢ morale for better results. In the case of the controllerââ¬â¢s resp onse the organizational milieu is reflected as one operating in an ideal milieu, which is not profitable and achievable when measuring performance against an absolute standard. The advantage of this response is that offers an insight that the organization need to change tactic on nature of the cost standard. In this case the cost standards should be measured to par relative to a golf course. This will enable the management to evaluate

BUSINESS ECONOMICS Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
BUSINESS ECONOMICS - Essay Example Open market operations involves the buying back or selling of government securities. Of the government wants to increase the supply of money it will buy back the securities it has sold to financial institutions in exchange of currency that will then be circulated in the market in the form of investments or lending. If the government wants to decrease the money supply it will sell its securities and holding onto the money that was previously in circulation. Another way to control money supply is to adjust the rate of lending at which the banks can obtain loans from the central bank or other banks. Higher rate will result in low borrowing and hence tightened money supply and vice versa. Lastly, Cash Reserve requirement is also adjusted in order to control money in circulation. Cash reserve is the amount of funds that the financial institutions are required to keep aside. This is a percentage of the total deposits and higher cash reserve requirement allows banks to lend out less funds. Similarly lower cash reserve requirement enables banks to have more funds to lend out. Unconventional tools of money supply include the central bankââ¬â¢s commitment to keep rates low in the future. Another means is to adjust the central bankââ¬â¢s assets to provide ease in credit through the change in different rates and prices. Third unconventional way is lower the policy rate to zero by supplying reserves that are more than the required rate (Highered.mcgraw-hill.com, 2011). Money supply is a crucial aspect that determines the value of currency and inflationary measures. Conventional ways are the standard means for the central bank to control money supply. However, if the economic conditions do not permit the central bank to use the conventional means they resort to unconventional means which are effective but not good for the economy in the long run due to their unpredictable and risky nature. Compare and contrast the two artworks Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Compare and contrast the two artworks - Essay Example In both sculptures, artists have utilized the concept of contrast intended to give varied objects comprising main artworks real implications2,3. This is to ensure each artwork despite appearing different from the other; they have brought the required meaning. For instance, the most striking and common contrast evident in these two artworks is the aspect of color-light interaction. Light in these two artworks strikes them from a source placed up diagonally in relation to the objectsââ¬â¢ position. Hence, illuminating varied and key areas of the artworks the way a real sun would suppose it was during daytime and in the open space far from the buildings or any other shelter. However, lightning in both artworks varies considerably whereby Cubi XIXââ¬â¢s illumination intensity is more than that of Henry Moore's figure. This is despite the source of illumination casting shadows beneath the two works. Probably, the reason why Cubi XIXââ¬â¢s illumination exceeds that of Henry Moore' s figure is due to its placement, which is outside as per the artistââ¬â¢s desire for the object to reflect any change of the natural light4. Similarly, the two objects have also utilized negative space with the intention of creating three-dimensional works5. Hence, this induces the aspect of depth evident when observing spaces and holes found in between varied objects overlapping each other without being in contact. However, in the Henry Moore's figure, its holes appear natural compared to those found in David Smith's artwork. Since, the latter due to its geometrical shapes suggest the holes comprising negative spaces are artificial, which is contrary to Henry Moore's figure6. Since, Henry Moore's artwork comprises of oval and irregular holes inside it, which is contrary to David Smith's object whose varied objects are geometric and seem to assume a certain array with the intention of attaining the required balance. Artistsââ¬â¢ through these two artworks despite relaying div erse massages, their respective emphasizes varies considerably. This is evident in the mode of utilizing light whereby David Smith's object has increased illumination compared to that of Henry Moore. The latter artistââ¬â¢s emphasis encompasses depicting the entire object evident from its mild illumination, which is similar to a light produced by an artificial source, and striking an item under a shade or in a building. This is contrary to Cubi XIX, which focuses on depicting varied natural lightââ¬â¢s alterations, which is the sun. Hence, prompting the artist to use beaten steel as the objectââ¬â¢s sole material so that it may reflect the light as necessitated. This is evident from the varied parts of the entire objects that have high illumination intensity compared to both its rear parts and those of Henry Moore figure. Another outstanding divergence between the two objects encompasses the aspect of texture whereby Henry Mooreââ¬â¢s artwork has an extremely smooth surf ace than that of David Smith's artwork7. Mainly, this emanates from the materials constituting the two respective works. David Smith's figure is not evenly smooth except in spaces or distortions made on the steel by the sculptorââ¬â¢s tool when shaping it to assume the required shape. However, Henry Moore in his work seems to have used a special tool in combination with hands to attain an appealing surface to feel. Since, the material comprising its artwork seems to be clay or any other similar matter

Effect of Globalisation on Inflation
Effect of Globalisation on Inflation Contents list (jump to) Introduction Body Content Globalization Discourage Inflation? How does Globalisation discourage inflation in OECD countries? Globalization Encourage inflation? How Does Globalization Affect China Inflation? Conclusion Appendix (1) Appendix (2) Bibliography Introduction In this advancement era, communicating and sharing of cultures between countries has become much easier. Not only that, good and services can be consumed by country that are not being produced within the country. For example, in countries that have two good or services only, country will be producing good that they are good at producing in term of comparative advantages or even through theory of abundant factor of production. This mean, country will export the good that they are good at producing and importing good that they are poor at producing. Globalization makes import and export between countries possible. What is globalization? According to BBC, globalization is process by which the world is becoming more interconnected as compared to before. This is because; globalization is the mean of the worldwide movement toward integration in term of economic, financial, trade and also communication. The history of Globalization has begun century ago, however, different economics, have different opinion on when globalization actually begin. Some economics that agree with Adam smith, believe that globalization happen on two most important events that is being recorded in the history. The two major event that are related to globalization is significantly dated in 1492 in event of Christopher Colombus stumbles on the Americas in search of spices and 1498 in event of Vasco da Gama makes an end run around Africa and snatched monopoly rents away from the Arab and Venetian spice trader (Kevin H.ORourke, 2000). Some economics like Andre Gunder Franks believe that globalization begins only from 1500 onward and economics such as Jerry Bentley argues that globalization begin even before 1500. A test was being carried out to test the globalization impact on economic. The test looks at the connection between factor price, commodity price and endowment worldwide. However, in the year 1492 and 1498, there is no evidence showing that globalization occurs in the two year. Only in the 19th century, there is abundant of evidence support that in this century, a big globalization bang has occurred. (Kevin H.ORourke, Abstract, 2000). The reason for globalization to occur in a large scale is because the advancement of transportation, technology and reduction of tariff. With the advancement of transport such as containerisation have make transportation of good from one nation to another nation much more efficient and also cheaper. Containerisation is the use of common size of container to transport good from one nation to another nation. In addition, advancement of technology such as internet has contributed highly to sharing of information and also enables people to communicate around the world. Tariff is used to increase the price of the imported good. With the support of World Trade Organization (WTO), who aims is to encourage country to trade in a free trade barrier environment. With the reduction of tariff, people will be able to consume more of foreign produced goods and services. Other than that, mobility of capital and labour also contributed largely to the globalization era that we are facing in today worl d. Many countries have tried many ways to control their inflation. This is because, if inflation is too high, the cost of living of a nation will be high, and eventually affecting it standard of living to fall. Inflation refers to the rate at which price level of general good and services is rising. With the raise of price level of good and services in a country, purchasing power of consumer in the nation itself will fall. Inflation rate is being measured by percentage change in Consumer Price Index (CPI) . Consumer price index is the weighted average of good and services that are being purchased by a typical household. Some cause of inflation is the market power, demand pull .asset market boom and shock supply (T.Harvey, 2011). One of the examples is that during an economic expansion, household will have surplus of money. With this abundant of money, household will increase their demand of good and services. Thus, in response toward the increase in demand for goods and services, firm w ill have to increase the price of good and services to reduce the demand. This increase in price level in response of high demand is an example of inflation The main question now is does globalization affect inflation? Many economics hold different perspective about globalization and inflation. There are also various opinions in regard of inflation and globalization. Some economists say that globalization will encourage inflation to rise, while other economics have contrary view about inflation and globalization. Therefore, we are going to examine whether or not globalization has an impact of the nation inflation. Body Content Globalization Discourage Inflation? Economist Richard Fisher and W.Michael Cox of Dallas Federal Reserve have discovered that ââ¬Å"the more globalized a country is, they tend to pursue policy that achieve faster economic growth, lower inflation, higher income and greater economic freedomâ⬠(COX, 2006). Meanwhile countries that are less globalized tend to pursue policies that interfere with the market and will eventually lead the country into stagnation, inflation and diminished competitiveness. Country that are more globalized are able to experience faster economic growth because, they focus mainly on producing good that they are able to produce with a lower cost of production. This mean that all globalized country will be producing more of good that they are producing at a lower cost and produce less of good that they are producing at a higher cost. By doing so, country will experience a surplus of good that they are producing more and shortage of good that they are producing less. Therefore, country will impor t good that they experiencing shortage and exporting good that they are experience a surplus. This specialisation will enable firm to experience a lower average cost or production and consumer to experience a lower price. As the price of good decreases, it means that the inflation rate have decreases. ââ¬Å"The consequent significant additions to world production and trade have clearly put downward pressure on the domestic priceâ⬠(Greenspan, 2004). How does Globalisation discourage inflation in OECD countries? A research has been conducted on the OECD countries regarding the impact that globalization has on inflation. The research included a sample of 22 OECD countries that consist of Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK, and the USA. The research uses KOF-index as a measurement of globalization which cover the economics and social and political dimension of globalization as proxies for globalization and simple average inflation as a measurement of inflation (Pehnelt, 2007). The result has shown that (Appendix 1) that as the KOF index increases, the inflation rate has decreases. There are several reasons that have contributed to this negative relationship between inflation and globalization which are the import price effect, global competition effect, labour market effect and so on. The import price effect is one of the factors that has contributed to the result that KOF index and Inflation are negatively related. With globalization, comparative advantage and also economics of scale can be achieved. This is because, integration of low income into the world economy and also the enhancement of division of labour. There is two function of import price in a globalized economy is that it have direct influence over inflation and also can be used to determine the domestic price of good and services. In the particular sector, the downward pressure of import price can influence the domestic inflation by lowering them down. As the import price fall, it will also have a direct impact on the fall in the consumer price which is proportion to the share of import in the actual consumption basket. Since imported good are being used as a substituted for domestic product. Therefore, when imported price decreases, it will eventually cause the overall inflation rate in the country to fall as well. Another reason that affects the KOF index to have a negative effect with inflation is because of the global competition effect. In general global competition refer to the good and services that are being provided by competing companies to serve international customers. With a higher import penetration, OECD countries have experience enhanced competition in their country. When a country has experience an enhanced competition that result from higher import penetration, it will limit the monopoly power of its domestic producer. This causes, domestic producer to be unable to increase the price of good even if the domestic demand increases or even cost of production increases. It means that as country experiencing an economic integration, respective country will be experiencing a higher price elasticity of demand. This causes domestic firm to reduce their mark-up price. Since it is an elastic demand curve, by reducing the mark-up price will induce more customers to purchase the good. This is because, in an elastic demand curve, a percent decrease in price will induce more than a percent increase in the quantity demand in the economic. However, the size of reduction in mark-up price is depending on the intensity of the foreign competition. The more open an economy is , the higher the competitive pressure it put on the domestic producer. Other than that, labour market effect also plays a role in the negative relationship between globalization and also inflation. With the integration of huge developing and newly industrialized countries into the global economy, it has put a downward pressure on the wage rate in OECD countries in certain sector. This is because as more country enters the global world, the supply of labour in the labour market will increase and it wills eventually causes the economy to experience a decrease in the wage rate of worker. With a lower cost of production, it will cause the production of good to be produced at a cheaper cost. Thus, as the cost of production decrease, it mean that price of imported product will decrease. Therefore, it shows that as a country becomes more globalized, the country will experience a fall in product price in certain sector. Globalization Encourage inflation? According to the Globalization Hypothesis (GH), it stated that the internationalization of the good and financial market has led to the increase of the dependence of the national macroeconomics outcome which is inflation rates and business cycle on the international factor (Francesco Bianchi, 2013). Not only that, Economics Ben Bernanke said that When the offsetting effects of globalization on the prices ofmanufactured imports and on energy and commodity prices are considered together, there seems to be little basis for concluding that globalization overall has significantly reduced inflation, said Bernanke. Indeed, the opposite may be true. (Chen, 2007) How Does Globalization Affect China Inflation? In the year 2006, China has experience an increase of 30% in the price level or energy metal and agricultural product. The reason for the raise in the commodity price of good in China is because of the raise in the demand for commodity in the growing of world economy. Not only that, As time goes on , Chinese are becoming more richer and the middle class citizen are growing . This show that the demand for food and food related product will increase. However, the supply of food has fall due to the development of housing and commercial on the arable land. Arable land is land that is suitable for the growing of crops. Thus with arable land being used as a housing area , the supply of food for China has decreases. With globalization, the change in the use of land and also increasing demand could result in a higher structural increase in the food price. Not only that the stagnant of the supply of commodities create an even greater world demand for product and may result in a even higher pr ice increase. As show in the in appendix 2, it indicates that as years pass, the entire commodities price in the world has increases dramatically. Conclusion In conclusion, Globalization may have some impact on inflation. However, there is still having on-going debate that globalization will cause inflation to rise. While other economics supports that globalization may discourage inflation rate to rise. As shown, OECD countries experience a decrease in the inflation rate when they are having a high openness to trade. However country like China have experience an increase in the price of commodity such as oil price and food price when there is globalization. Appendix (1) Appendix (2) Bibliography Braeuninger, D. The Last Of The Mohicans Essay -- essays research papers
In The Last of the Mohicans by James Fenimore Cooper, historical romance is apparent through settings, characters and plots. Cooper is considered by many critics to be the father of the American historical romance. Fred Lewis Patee said, 'Not only was Cooper the pioneer (of the historical romance) in America, and thus worthy of the highest praise, but in many respects his romances have never been surpassed.'; (212) Cooper celebrated the creative spirit of the individual and had a deep appreciation for nature. He was a romantic who enjoyed the mysteriousness and exoticness of the frontier. He favored the use of emotions over reason. Through his romantic writings, Cooper is able to captivate the reader and led them on journey through his imaginary world. Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã The setting in The Last of the Mohicans exhibits Cooper's historical romantic writing. The novel takes place in the American frontier. It is a place of '…wild and virgin nature.'; (Roundtree 52) The immense beauty and threat of danger from its' terrain creates an exotic impression on the reader. The mystique of the frontier entices the reader and allows their imagination to soar. Fred Lewis Pattee expresses his feelings on the use of the setting in 'The Historical Romance: Cooper's The Last of the Mohicans,'; when he says: At every step throughout the romance the reader finds himself in dim, mysterious forests that stretch on every side into the unknown.
